Over 4 million iPhone 4S handsets sold in first three days on sale
Monday 17th October
Apple has announced that it has sold a record 4 million iPhone 4S handsets since it went on sale on Friday 14th October. Analysts had expected the company to sell between 2m and 4m of the iPhone 4S in the initial rush, compared with 1.7m of the iPhone 4 in three days after its release in the summer of 2010.
The press release issued by Apple also states that over 25 million customers are now using iOS 5 on their iPhones, iPod Touches, iPads and the like.
"iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend - the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
Apple unveils the iPhone 4S
4 October 2011
At 10am Mountain Time (6pm UK time) on Tuesday 4th October, Apple's marketing executive, Phil Schiller, unveiled the company's latest phone offering, the iPhone 4S, during their 'Let's Talk iPhone' event.
Although the upgraded device is not the complete overhaul that had been rumoured, the new device will feature the A5 chip technology, enabling it to perform seven times faster than the iPhone 4, and it will also include a dual core CPU, dual core graphics, and an eight mega pixel camera.
Speaking on the camera's new features, Phil Schiller said: "CMOS backside illuminated sensor gets 73% more light than the iPhone 4 sensor, and one-third faster. On top of that, we place a high-end IR filter for greater accuracy and uniformity." For the first time, HD video recording will also be supported on the platform. Footage in the 1080p format will run with real-time video image stabilisation, and real-time temporal noise reduction.
The iPhone 4S will also carry a voice control system called Siri, which will enable users to gain access to a range of information by speaking verbal questions into their handsets. Things such as weather updates and restaurant location finding were demonstrated via a video display at the launch event. When verbally prompted, Siri will also read messages aloud, and allow users to compose them via dictation.
The battery power of the iPhone 4S has been increased to enable up to eight hours of 3G talk time, 14 hours of 2G talk time, six hours of 3G browsing and nine hours of WiFi browsing, and, thanks to an improved antenna system, data downloads will be twice as fast. The US pricing revealed at the launch placed the 16GB handset at $199 and 32GB at $299. It will also be the first iPhone to feature a 64GB model, priced at $399. Apple also confirmed that the iPhone 4 will now be available in both black and white at the reduced price of $99. The 8GB iPhone 3GS will be available for free on contract.
The iPhone 4S phone is expected to go on sale from all five UK networks from 14 October, though none are currently able to give details of UK pricing.
Study reveals 41% of mobile users to buy Apple iPhone 4S
28 September 2011
New research carried out in the US by mobile ad network InMobi revealed that a massive 41% of mobile users in North America, Canada and Mexico plan to buy the next generation phone - potentially making the iPhone 4S Apple's most successful launch to date. The study further finds that over 50% of those users will make the purchase within the first six months of its launch. Interestingly, the study also uncovered that more than half of BlackBerry users (52%) and as many as 27% of Android users are planning to switch to the new Apple iPhone 4S.
Those surveyed were also asked if they would purchase the iPhone if it was only a product update - akin to the 3GS version of the iPhone that was released in 2009. The research shows that in this instance, interest in the new smartphone would be significantly lower, with fewer than 15% of consumers likely to purchase the new handset. Yet 28% of current BlackBerry smartphone owners indicated they would still switch to Apple.
The research also revealed that consumers are hopeful for the delivery of certain improvements in the new phone, including improved battery life, increased processing speed, higher quality screen resolution and stronger phone service.
Commenting on InMobi's findings, James Lamberti, VP Global Research & Marketing at InMobi said: "The combination of Apple's increasing market share in mobile advertising and general consumer interest in their latest technology is another boon for the mobile advertising industry. Apple is currently the clear leader in terms of compelling user experience and customer loyalty, and we feel that their quality and pace of innovation when it comes to mobile devices will continue to improve the content and advertising experience for consumers for iPhone5 and beyond."
